O objetivo do artigo é analisar as principais teorias referentes à internacionalização de empresas e modos de entrada em novos mercados e verificar como estas formulações podem explicar o crescimento de empresas de tecnologia da informação, com enfoque na empresa LinkedIn. Dessa forma, procede-se uma breve resenha das principais teorias sobre a internacionalização de empresas. Em seguida, descreve-se a história de crescimento do LinkedIn em relação ao seu ingresso e expansão o mercado internacional. Com base na revisão teórica e na trajetória de internacionalização, avalia-se, por fim, a aderência das abordagens teóricas em relação a experiência da empresa. Embora algumas abordagens expliquem parcialmente a expansão do LinkedIn, os princípios da empresa born global são os que melhor explicam tal trajetória. O curto espaço de tempo antes da internacionalização, o caráter inovativo das plataformas social e profissional e a rápida expansão dos investimentos diretos externos confirmam a aplicabilidade dessa abordagem teórica ao caso do LinkedIn.
