Abstract

Deforestation is a serious environmental issue, which negatively impacts biodiversity and compromises the well-being of future generations. In this context, this article proposes to investigate the relationship between the loss of forest areas, the production of cereals and the growth of the urban population in South America, through an econometric analysis. The results indicate that cereal production and urban growth contribute to deforestation, while the Human Development Index (HDI), which considers education, longevity and income, has a positive effect on forest preservation. This evidence has important implications for the development of public policies aimed at promoting sustainable development. Therefore, this work contributes to the debate on the importance of conservation of primary forests as a means of guaranteeing economic growth in an environmentally responsible manner.
